Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo is Sydney’s city zoo, located on the shores of the harbour in New South Wales, Australia. With over 340 different species and approximately 2600 animals, the zoo is spread out over 21 hectares. Officially opened in 1916, Taronga Zoo has a wealth of history in its attractions and exhibits; as well as leading the way in conservation, scientific research and education. Ideal for people of all ages, both local and international, Taronga Zoo is the perfect place to visitors to interact with wildlife.

The Wild Asia precinct is a popular exhibit, featuring vibrant Asian rain forest wildlife – including Asian elephants – in a faithful environment. The brand new Great Southern Oceans houses marinelife such as native sea lions, seals and penguins. Other modern exhibits include the Platypus and Nocturnal Houses, and the Rainforest Aviary. Taronga Zoo’s famous animal encounters are extremely popular with local and international tourists, giving participants unique and up-close encounters with koalas, reptiles, giraffes, seals and other animals.

Animals at the zoo encompass an extensive array of species, both native and international; including reptiles, amphibians, elephants, chimpanzees, apes, birdlife and more. Our education program encourages people of all ages to interact with animals, learning in a way that is both engaging and involving.

The Taronga Zoo ferry runs from Circular Quay wharf, connecting up with local bus and cable car services – making it the easiest way for visitors to come to the zoo. The cable car offers magnificent views over the zoo and Sydney Harbour, taking travellers from the ferry wharf to the other end of the site.

Taronga also provides venue hire for functions, providing guests with amazing views over the harbour while enjoying the finest catering.
